A small batch of pumpkin, sugar, and plant-based oil makes a simple fall body-care ritual. Mix it fresh, use a gentle touch, and finish with moisturizer.
A simple vegan pumpkin body scrub
This three-ingredient recipe uses fine sugar for physical exfoliation, plain pumpkin purée for a soft texture, and sunflower oil for a conditioning feel. It is not a tested enzyme peel, and it is not intended to treat acne, pigmentation, or other skin conditions. Your skin may feel temporarily smoother after use, but exfoliation is an optional extra, not a requirement for healthy skin.
Ingredients for one use
- 2 tablespoons fine granulated sugar; choose sugar labeled vegan if you avoid bone-char processing
- 1 tablespoon plain, unsweetened pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling
- 1 teaspoon plain sunflower oil
Use smooth purée with no added spices or flavorings. Skip cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, lemon juice, and essential oils. They are unnecessary for exfoliation and may irritate skin. Choose fine sugar rather than coarse crystals.
Before you start
Avoid ingredients you are allergic to. Test a small amount on a small patch of intact body skin, rinse gently, and watch for a reaction over the next 24–48 hours before wider use. A home test cannot guarantee that irritation will not occur.
Do not use on broken, sunburned, irritated, or freshly shaved or waxed skin. Skip active rashes and inflamed areas. If you have eczema, psoriasis, very sensitive skin, or use medication that makes your skin fragile, ask your clinician whether physical exfoliation is appropriate.
How to make and use it
- Get ready. Wash your hands and use a clean bowl and spoon. Make sure your shower footing is secure, and keep a towel nearby.
- Mix the base. Stir the pumpkin purée and sunflower oil together.
- Add sugar just before use. Fold in the fine sugar until evenly combined. The moist purée will begin dissolving the sugar, so make this immediately before your shower rather than ahead of time.
- Wet your skin. Use lukewarm water. Start with a small amount on an area such as your forearm or lower leg.
- Apply lightly. Gently move your fingertips over the area for a few seconds. Do not press or scrub hard. Keep away from the face, neck, intimate areas, and any delicate or uncomfortable skin.
- Rinse promptly. This is a rinse-off body scrub, not a leave-on mask. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Stop and rinse immediately if you notice stinging, itching, or discomfort.
- Moisturize. Pat dry with a soft towel and follow with a moisturizer you already tolerate.
- Clean up carefully. Discard unused scrub and remove residue from the shower or tub. Oil can make surfaces slippery.
How often to use it
Try it once and see how your skin responds. If it stays comfortable, no more than once a week is a reasonable starting point; less often may suit you better. Do not combine it with exfoliating gloves, another scrub, or an acid exfoliant in the same session.
Redness, tightness, tenderness, or itching are reasons to stop, not signals that the scrub is working. More pressure and more frequent use can irritate skin rather than improve it. Seek medical advice if a reaction is severe or persists.
Make fresh and discard leftovers
This recipe contains moist food ingredients and has no tested preservative system. Make only what you need, use it immediately, and discard the rest. Do not keep a jar in the shower, refrigerate the mixed scrub for later use, or give it as a shelf-stable gift. Sugar, oil, and vitamin E do not make this mixture safely preserved.
Store unused pumpkin purée separately according to its packaging instructions. Never use spoiled or questionable food ingredients on your skin.
Finish with body butter
After rinsing, keep your routine simple. Our Vegan Deep Hydration Body Butter Cream is made with shea and mango butters, plus avocado and rosehip seed oils. It is a ready-made moisturizing option for after bathing, with or without a scrub.
Check the full ingredient list and scent selection for your needs, and apply according to the product directions. If it is new to you, introduce it separately from the scrub so it is easier to identify a reaction.

A little seasonal self-care should leave your skin comfortable. Keep the batch small and the touch light, and skip exfoliation whenever your skin needs a gentler day.
