Shea butter, cocoa butter, and plant-based oil make a rich body balm. A little suitable cosmetic bronze pigment adds temporary color or shimmer that washes off.
Bronzing is not self-tanning
This recipe deposits temporary color on your skin. It does not develop a tan or change your skin's pigment and contains no self-tanning active. The result may be more shimmer than coverage, depending on the colorant and your skin tone.
This is an untested home-use trial formula, not a finished commercial cosmetic. It provides no SPF or UV protection. Do not use it instead of sunscreen, mix it into sunscreen, or assume bronzed skin is protected.
Ingredients for a 20-gram trial batch
- 8 grams plain shea butter
- 4 grams plain cocoa butter
- 7.8 grams plain sunflower oil
- 0.2 grams vegan (ethically sourced) cosmetic bronze mica blend specifically documented by its supplier for leave-on body products at a 1% use level
Use a scale capable of accurately measuring 0.2 grams. Check the full ingredients and supplier documentation for the colorant: the word mica alone does not establish suitability. Use this amount only when the supplier explicitly supports it for this application. If you cannot verify suitability or measure accurately, omit the pigment and use 8 grams sunflower oil for an untinted 20-gram batch instead.
Do not substitute craft mica, glitter, candle color, cocoa powder, cinnamon, charcoal, or food coloring. Choose ingredients suitable for cosmetic use, avoid anything you are allergic to, and keep the batch unscented.
Equipment
- A suitable scale, clean dry utensils, and a small mixing dish
- A heat-safe container and saucepan for a gentle water bath
- Heat-resistant gloves and a clean, dry container
How to make it
- Prepare your tools. Wash your hands and thoroughly dry the equipment. Keep children and pets away from the hot mixture.
- Weigh separately. Measure each ingredient accurately. Handle mica gently to avoid airborne dust; do not inhale it.
- Disperse the pigment. Carefully wet the mica with a small portion of the measured sunflower oil and stir into a smooth slurry, following any additional supplier directions.
- Melt the butters gently. Place the shea and cocoa butters in a heat-safe container over a shallow, gently simmering water bath. Keep water out. Stir until just melted, then remove using heat protection. Never heat oils directly over a flame or leave unattended.
- Combine. Stir in the remaining measured sunflower oil and mica slurry until evenly distributed.
- Cool and stir. Stir periodically as the mixture cools and thickens to help distribute pigment. Transfer to a clean, dry container and let set fully. Never apply hot mixture to skin.
- Assess the trial. Check texture and color after 24–48 hours at room temperature. Firmness varies with ingredients and climate. Keep notes before changing a future small batch.
How to use
Test a tiny amount on a small area of intact body skin and watch for a reaction over 24–48 hours. A home test cannot guarantee tolerance. Then assess a very thin layer on a small section of an arm or leg in daylight.
Apply sparingly with clean, dry hands and blend well. Keep away from the face, eyes, lips, intimate areas, and broken or irritated skin. Do not apply immediately after shaving or waxing. Wash your hands afterward.
Expect transfer onto clothing, furniture, towels, and bedding, especially with sweat or friction. It is not waterproof. Allow it to settle, avoid pale fabrics, and remove with your usual body cleanser. Do not keep adding pigment for deeper coverage without a supported formula.
Safety and storage
Stop for itching, redness, burning, or breakouts; seek medical advice for a severe or persistent reaction. Oils can make feet and surfaces slippery. This trial is intended for adult body use, not children.
Keep dry, closed, and away from heat and sunlight. Handle with clean, dry hands or utensils, do not share, and label with ingredients and the date made. Do not add water, aloe, or other wet ingredients.
This home formula has no tested shelf life. Make a small batch rather than promising months of storage. Discard if water enters, contamination is suspected, or the smell, color, or texture changes unexpectedly. No visible change does not guarantee safety. Vitamin E would not make the mixture broadly preserved.
Prefer an untinted ready-made moisturizer?
Our Vegan Deep Hydration Body Butter Cream contains shea and mango butters, plus avocado and rosehip seed oils. It is a ready-made moisturizing alternative, not a bronzer or self-tanner.
Check its full ingredient list and scent selection and follow product directions. Do not mix pigment into its container or assume a modified cream retains its preservation or shelf life.
