August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month!

Hair loss seems like it's becoming more common everyday. August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month so we wanted to come up with some ways that will help reverse and prevent your beautiful locs from falling out.

1. Diet & Health:

There are many things that can cause hair loss. Genetics, menopause, thyroid issues, vitamin deficiencies, and other medical conditions are a few examples. Smoking can also contribute to hair loss by damaging the hair follicle's DNA. Keeping your body clean and eating a healthy diet rich in beneficial vitamins help to prevent problems. Eating foods with lots of vitamin A such as sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and mango help to increase hair growth. The retinoids in vitamin A are what help your hair. They increase the production of sebum and help speed up growth.

2. Herbs & Oils:

If a hormone imbalance is part of your hair loss problem, plants such as saw palmetto, green tea, stinging nettle, pygeum bark, fenugreek, tea tree, lavender, coffee, flax seeds, and pumpkin seeds help block DHT. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is what causes hair loss in both men and women. A study was done where men between the ages of 23 and 64 with male pattern baldness used saw palmetto, and they saw a 60% hair growth improvement! Another study showed a 32% increase in hair density in 62 adults when saw palmetto was applied topically for only 3 months! Other herbs that help with hair growth include hibiscus, peppermint, rosemary, licorice root, cayenne pepper, calendula, burdock, neem, and many others. Onion has been shown to help with alopecia specifically. Stimulating blood flow on the scalp is a key part of promoting hair growth. Try giving yourself a nice scalp massage for just 4 minutes a day, and include some oils that promote healthy blood flow such as rosemary or eucalyptus. Applying nourishing oils like coconut, olive oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, and many others helps to strengthen and repair hair. They also keep hair moisturized and prevent breakage. A study was done showing how coconut oil's lauric acid has been shown to help bind protein in hair and strengthen from the roots down.

3. Gentle Hair Care

If you are suffering with bad breakage you might consider cutting out heat styling tools and other styling that puts strain on your hair. Skip the tight updos and opt for a loose bun or side braid. Avoid bleaching, dying, or perming your hair as it is very drying. If you still want to dye your hair, try using natural hair dyes that use henna. It's 100% natural and won't cause breakage. Make sure you are also using a nice gentle shampoo that isn't too drying. To repair damage and nourish hair, make up a hot oil treatment DIY or buy a natural hair mask treatment. You can also buy leave in hair growth treatments that use some of the herbs & oils listed above. We just happen to have a BRAND NEW hair growth spray that you can find here, along with our other hair care products here.

4. Manage Stress

Stress is a factor that a lot of people sometimes don't realize can make your hair fall out. Having extreme short term stress and long term stress disrupts the normal life cycle of hair. Stress signals to your hair that it's time to be shed even if it's not ready to be. Some people get so stressed that they may even pull their own hair out. Lowering stress levels can make a huge difference for your hair health. Some things that can lower stress levels are exercise, yoga, meditation, aromatherapy, herbal supplements, and teas.
