Why Should You Use Natural Sunblock?
With school almost out and vacations, sunny days and water activities on the horizon, it might be time to rethink your sun protection products. Problems With Conventional Sunscreen
Conventional chemical-based sunscreens work by using chemicals such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, homosalate, and octinoxate to penetrate the skin and absorb UV rays. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors, estrogenic, and can interfere with the body's natural hormone processes. This increases the risk for thyroid disorders, breast cancer, and other cancers.
The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics reported that:
"Sunscreens protect against sunburn, but there is no evidence that they protect against basal cell carcinoma or melanoma. Safety of sunscreens is a concern, and sunscreen companies have emotionally and inaccurately promoted the use of sunscreens."
The Environmental Working Group tested 1400+ sunscreens, and only 5% met their safety standard. Over 40% were listed as potentially contributing to skin cancer! One ingredient most commonly used, retinyl palmitate, was shown to speed up the rate of cancer cell growth by 21%.
Natural Mineral Based Sunblocks Are Different
Mineral based sunblocks are exactly how they sound. Certain minerals, such as zinc oxide, sit on top of the skin to block out and reflect the sun's rays. They are not absorbed into the skin like chemical-based sunscreens.
It is important to select mineral sunblocks that use non-nano minerals. Non-nano just means that the mineral particles are not small enough to penetrate the skin.
Mineral Sunblocks Are Reef Safe!
Another issue with conventional chemical sunscreens is that they are bleaching our coral reefs and causing them to die off! When swimming, some of the chemicals are released into the water, and corals ingest them. What is released into the water when wearing non-nano mineral sunblock, the corals are not able to ingest it. Therefore, they do not contribute to bleaching and are 100% reef safe!
